The Story of Marama.

The land Marama, land of light, home of the Tangata - the caretakers - and the Kaitiki - the tree keepers. For millions of years they lived together in peace, caring for the land and their trees.
The trees of light sustained life in Marama by their radiant glow and covered the world in their colors. The Kaitiki cared for the trees and planted even more.
On the other hand, the Tangata were dependent on the light. Therefore, they traded with the Kaitiki so that they could maintain the care of the trees.

Overview of Landscape Marama

Then the darkness arrived.

But over time, the two peoples were driven apart by greed and betrayal. As a consequence, the Kaitiki retreated to their forests and the Tangata to their villages. The trees that provided the cities with light and life were thus no longer protected and began to decay.
The Tangata had to find their own ways to keep the trees alive, with moderate success. The kaitiki were no longer seen in the lands of the Tangata and fell into oblivion, becoming fables and myths that were recited to children as bedtime stories.
With the lack of care for the light givers, a disease spread among the trees and darkness came. And with the darkness came evil. Evil diffuse creatures emerged from the shadows and devoured all life in the forests. As a result, the Tangata could no longer go into the realms of darkness without receiving great harm.
The trees were now no longer life-givers but life-takers.

But there is still hope.

The Tangata retreated into their villages around the few strongest trees, well aware that with their retreat all remaining healthy trees would in time also fall victim to the darkness. The situation seemed hopeless and even the last knowledge about the care of the trees seemed to be forgotten.
But among the Tangata there was still a group who had not lost hope and faced the fight against the darkness. To help the trees in the land, they went in search of the Kaitiki. A group of men and women set out from their village on an expedition into the forests of the Kaitiki. Several years went by without any sign of life. Everyone seemed to have vanished. But one day a foundling was found at the gates of their village.
More years passed and the child grew up as an orphan, while the Tangata continued the fierce fighting against the darkness. One day, however, the tree in the middle of the settlement died and at the same time the child began to glow.
